Friends who Sweat Together
stay motivated & grow strong together |
Just where has the time gone? Can you believe it’s 5 week since the last newsletter?
Time has flown and my feet didn’t really hit the ground after the world championships until my holiday last week.
I continued to train until my last track race at the end of July and then my focus turned to a fitness challenge I set myself and Kristy.
The Novo pairs event at the National Fitness games in September.
Why you ask?
Knowing I was starting shockwave therapy mid august and that for 72 hours following treatment high impact training would be out so track racing was off the schedule I wanted something to focus on to keep me motivated with my fitness until the rest of my track team broke for their end of season recovery so I’d be in sync with them.
The NFG looked like the perfect motivator for both of us. Different training that would challenge us in new ways, training together for that added motivation, accountability and fun and enabled us to bring purpose to our sessions over the summer.
It’s been an absolute god send.
After 8 months of training focused on the world championships I knew it would be tough to keep going, I’ve had some good recovery time, a week off track training and a good 2 weeks of gym training at various times and now a full week of both.
I’ve helped my fellow Irish masters athlete with some of her sessions in preparation for her national champs to keep the track work going but now treatment on my foot has started I am grateful to have this goal to work towards alongside an multi sport challenge with running instructor Debbie.
A workout buddy means that your training sessions can be more enjoyable, challenging and also consistent. It means having someone to rely on as well as someone relying on you, to push each other to get the best results possible.
A lot of my training of past has been quite solitary, it’s great to put on my headphones, pump up the volume and get the work done but I’ve discovered over the last few months how many benefits having that workout buddy can bring.
I’ve enjoyed helping my friends, just as much as I do helping my clients, and they’ve kept me accountable and consistent when It might have been all to easy to step back.
I’ve found having training buddies across the board of gym, track and running I’ve enjoyed the sessions more but also been encouraged to work harder to help each other to get the best results possible.
So right now as I have a moment to reflect on my accomplishments the one thing that ripples through is the friendships I’ve gained over the years from fitness.
My closest friends have all come from fitness in one way or another, whether that be them as a class participant from my body combat teaching days at Bracknell sports centre, my days instructing at FastTrack Fit Camp, as a running instructor and more recently my return to masters athletics.
Whatever the future holds in terms of my next goal or challenge I am feel very lucky to have this wonderful circle of friends to call upon, to be able to confide in, to lift each other up and motivate each other when needed, to push each other to be the best and do the best we can in that moment.
So here’s to fitness, and to the friends I’ve met through it.
