Quit Bathing in Sh*T
So the first bank holiday of 3 in May.
I am currently away on a warm weather training weekend, what was meant to be filled with sun filled track sessions.
But obviously I’ve had to re-think and re-plan.
Two sessions a day, one cardio based on the assault bike (ok not my favourite but a great alternative) or in the pool (again not my favourite but perfect to keep that fitness up without compromising the recovery of my calf) and my weights as session 2.
I am very much focusing on what I can do, not what I can’t and having run Amsterdam marathon a few years back on just bike training I know these alternative sessions, if planned right, work!
Lots of my friends, family and clients still wonder how I am coping so well with my injury. Still asking if “I am ok with it?” , almost waiting for the realism to sink in and for me to wallow in my own self pity.
But I won’t.
I’ve just adapted my training.
Me having a “poor me” mindset isn’t going to get me back running any quicker, in fact it’s likely to send me on the even slower road to recovery and possibly give up running all together.
In between training I’ve been enjoying some real rest and recovery in the sun, (and maybe a glass of red wine too) and been reading a fabulous book by Adam Cam called “Savage wisdom”.
One chapter is all about the victim mentality and it really resonated with me as to why I’ve chosen not to wallow in self pity.
So here goes, the full works from Adam himself, apologises now for his choice of words but some times you need to hear it the hard way:
“Having a victim’s mentality is like bathing in your own shit, then wondering why you smell
We all bullshit ourselves in some way.
So much so, that some of us end up covered in shit.
Sometimes our bullshit is so good and so believable that not only do we buy into it, but others do too… leaving them covered in shit as well.
This “bullshit” is a story that we tell ourselves as to why we can’t achieve or accomplish something.
Over time, with a bit of repetition, we then create an identity of ourselves based on the story we have created in our mind.
This self-imposed identity sabotages our ability to make any change to our life’s circumstance, rendering us absolutely f**king helpless, while we flap around in our own shit, blaming everyone and everything for our short comings in life.
Listen to me, that’s not you!
Before you ever even consider pointing your finger at anyone or anything for your struggles, hardships or adversity, remember this…
You may not be to blame for your current situation..
but you ARE fully responsible for how you choose to respond to it.
By accepting and owning that responsibility, you sidestep the shit bath and instantly regain the power to control your life.”
And that is how I am working through this struggle.
Taking control.
Focusing on what I can do, adapting my plan and gaining control of my rehabilitation.
I am so grateful to those who have sponsored my rehabilitation process so far, the 6 weeks of shockwave on my Achilles starts next week and has taken well over 75% of the funds, but it’s a treatment plan that starts with removing the cause of the calf tear in the first place and then i will be working with my Chiropractor/Sports Therapist Amanda from Back to motion and my Strength and conditioning coach to stop it returning in future.
I fully expect a few more adaptations and changes to come in future to both my work and training schedule, but I am ready to be flexible and keep that positive mindset.
So as we head into May, a month with 3 bank holidays, 3 four day working weeks, weekends away, socials, BBQ’s (we can hope!!) don’t let it ruin your health and fitness campaign.
Get ahead.
Have a plan.
Be ready to adapt and change.
We’ve got our FREE 30 day Muscle Mayhem challenge starting in the women’s wellness group today.
I’ve looked at these bank holidays in May and decided the best way forward it to keep it simple.
Keep it rep based.
So our members can complete first thing.
Or can split over the day.
Use it as a break in their working day.
Do it whilst the kettle is boiling.
It about making the challenge achievable.
So no one can use May as an excuse as to why they can’t achieve or accomplish this challenge.
So it’s onto another cardio based interval session this morning for me now. Luckily for me I’ve come away with a friend who loves fitness as much as me and who has joined me on every session.
Been my accountability whilst I am here.
Been my inspiration.
Because even athletes and trainers need accountability and inspiration.
In the meantime if you need any help removing “The “bullshit” story that we tell ourselves as to why we can’t achieve or accomplish something.” remember we are here to help.
Whether that’s 1-2-1 on Project you or Personal training sessions, in a group like Shred 40 or Virtually from our Women’s wellness club.
Just drop us a PM and let’s have a chat
I hope you all have a fabulous Monday.
Love
